SYNOPSIS

Digital television promises many new and exciting opportunities:

  • Additional transmission capacity due to the switch-off of analogue services, and digital compression and transmission techniques providing more programming capacity;

  • Better coverage and more efficient use of valuable spectrum;

  • New enhanced data, interactive and mobile services and many more.

RTB started experimental DTT transmission in January 2006 using a number of decoder boxes. The trial has been conducted successfully. It is mostly to determine reception quality and other technical issues as well as on the one way interactive TV content transmission.

RTB hope that to launch its first phase of digital transmission in August this year with a full power digital TV transmitter installed in Subok.

Many broadcasters in the region are considering the next step towards digital broadcasting but the challenge will be to consider and adopt suitable strategies of conversion.

In his presentation, Mr Lim will brief on the status of implementation for RTB to go digital , the challenges and opportunities that Digital TV will offer to RTB.
