A further shift needs to be created in the mindset and behaviour of the staff and contractors to ensure they adopt a safety-first attitude at all times to prevent accidents from taking place.

This was said by Asset Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company (BSP) Haji Salleh Bostaman bin Haji Zainal Abidin in his welcoming speech during the opening of a two-day IECEx 2008 Industry Symposium at Brunei Asia Pacific Learning Hub, Seria.

"Safety remains a top priority for BSP, which includes assuring the safety of our people and the community around us," he said. "Protecting the environment and assets are at the heart of our operations."

He also said, "The theme for the symposium, 'Electrical Equipment in Explosive Atmospheres', is the most relevant not just for our business but also for other
industries in general in this country that use electrical equipment."

BSP's safety performance continues to be ranked among the best in the industry worldwide, thus "we cannot be complacent in our pursuit for 'no harm to our people', and this year, we are channelling our energies towards achieving the target of Goal Zero, which means accident-free in the workplace", he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy Division) at the Prime Minister's Office Awang Haji Ismail bin Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Setia Dato Paduka Haji Hashim, in his speech, said occupational safety and health have always been a priority for both government and private sectors.

Excellent occupational safety and health, he said, are positive factors to the working environment to help safeguard properties and improve productivity.
Awang Haji Ismail, who was present as the guest of honour, added that the symposium is aimed at "stimulating a great deal of learning among participants,
especially on the availability of local and international standards, and support organisations while promoting and encouraging the use of new and emerging
technologies that are commercially available".

He also said an asset or facility owner is fully responsible for the safety of his personnel and the plant.

Meanwhile, the symposium is organised by IET in collaboration with IEC-APRC and IECEx, and hosted by Brunei Asia Pacific Shell Learning Hub of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company.

The event is also supported by the Energy Division at the Prime Minister's Office and Construction Planning and Research Unit at the Ministry of Development.
