An exhibition promoting energy conservation is currently on at The Mall in Gadong.

The three-day event was launched by the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, yesterday.

It features technologies and products that are inline with the theme of the 1st International Conference of the Institution of Engineering & Technology Brunei Darussalam Network, "Sustainable Energy Management in the Era of Information & Communication Technology".

The minister also officiated the launch of Brunei's "Energy Labelling and Standards", which is part of the government's Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC) initiatives aimed at educating consumers about the level of energy efficiency of electrical products that they purchase.

The Energy Label certificate will be issued based on a five-star rating scheme from low (1) to excellent (5). It is hoped more people would opt for energy efficient appliances, as it would benefit them in the long run.

As the introduction of the "Energy Labelling and Standards" in Brunei is currently in its early stage, it is being implemented on a voluntary basis.

It was learnt that an Energy Labelling and Standards Task Force (ELSTF) had been formed by the Energy Division at the Prime Minister's Office. Members comprise personnel of the Energy Division at the Prime Minister's Office, Department of Technical Services, Public Works Department and Department of Electrical Services.

Toyota's hybrid vehicle, "Prius", which is currently on display at the NBT booth, was a crowd puller. The environmentally-friendly vehicle runs on both battery and engine, thus reducing the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air.

There are currently only two Toyota hybrid vehicles in the Sultanate, which Toyota NBT exhibits to promote the company's commitment towards attaining a greener future.

Other exhibitors include Energy Division (Painting and Snake & Ladder Displays), Little Bean Company, Joffren Omar Company Sdn Bhd, Isco Development Services Sdn Bhd, Winfield (Philips), Department of Electrical Services, Energy Division, Prime Minister's Office, Techtrack Supplies and Services Company, Maktab Teknik Sultan Saiful Rijal (MTSSR), Institute Teknologi Brunei (ITB), Q-Technologies, Vacant and P D S Engineering Sdn Bhd.

There is also an Energy Quest Giant Mat Game - 60 Steps to EEC (Energy Conservation and Efficiency). Twelve posters from the Energy Week 2008 Poster Competition are also on display.

Organised by the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Brunei Darussalam Network, members of the public are encouraged to visit the exhibition before it ends on Wednesday (May 28).

Among those who witnessed the launching ceremony yesterday were Hj Ismail bin POKPS DP Hj Hashim, the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Energy) at the Prime Minister's Office, and other senior government officers.
